Wednesday marks 9/9/09, and it will be the last time we'll see repeating numbers in the date until January 1, 2101. But it also holds special meaning for many people.
LiveScience.com writes that for numerologists, the number "9" is associated with forgiveness, compassion and success. But it can also be connected to arrogance and self-righteousness.
Mathematicians have been fascinated with "9" for its unique properties -- the sum of the two digits resulting from "9" multiplied by any other single digit will equal "9." For instance 9 x 3 = 27, 2 + 7 = 9.
Sept. 9 is also the 252nd day of the year. 2 + 5 + 2 = 9.
In Chinese culture, "9" is auspicious just as the number "8" is. While the word in Chinese for "8" strongly resembles that of "good fortune," the Chinese word for "9" resembles the word for "long-lasting." LiveScience reports that ancient Chinese emperors would display "9" prominently in their dress and architecture, often in the form of nine dragons. Also the Forbidden Palace in Beijing was rumored to have 9,999 rooms.
Still others think 9/9/09 calls for something more offbeat to be celebrated. The Web site urlesque.com has organized a ban on all cat-related stories and video, dubbing the day " A Day Without Cats on the Internet ." The site explains that they were inspired by their sister site, Asylum.com, who recently instituted a ban on all Megan Fox content. Asylum and other fellow sites Best Week Ever, PopEater, CuteOverload, among others, will also join the ban.
But what's the significance of the event taking place on 9/9/09? Urlesque doesn't say, but maybe it's just the cats' unlucky day.
Other events happening on 9/9/09:
• County clerk's offices will be offering special 9/9/09 wedding prices.
